Tojeść ciemnopurpurowa wytwarza krótkie podziemne rozłogi, pędy wzniesione wysokości około 45 cm, owłosione, kanciaste, nierozgałęzione. W sprzyjających warunkach bujnie rośnie, obficie kwitnie i intensywnie się rozrasta, może osiągnąć 70 cm wysokości. Liście lancetowate, długości około 8 cm, osadzone są na całym pędzie i mają kolor niebieskawy. Ciemnopurpurowe kwiaty średnicy około 5 mm skupione są w grona. Roślina kwitnie od czerwca do sierpnia, kwiaty w kłosie rozwijają się od dołu do góry. Górny wierzchołek kłosa do czasu rozwinięcia się wszystkich pojedynczych kwiatów jest lekko przewieszony.
